I am extremely pleased and excited to announce that our new book UNDERGROUND ANABOLICS is going to the printer this week. It should be hot off the press, and in readers’ hands, by early December. As many of you already know, the book includes an in-depth lab testing section, where we examined various black market steroid preparations for things like dosage and contamination. My co-author (Ronny Tober) and I have done our best to bring you extremely detailed reports on dozens of popular steroid products. These reports are more extensive than anything we have yet come across, and I think will generate a lot of discussion. I hope you will join us for the book release, scheduled to take place within the next few weeks.

As we prepare for the public release of this long awaited project, I am receiving a lot of questions about the testing. Who did we test? What kind of testing was done? How good/bad was it? While I am not going to release all the lab names or book results yet (sorry, you will have to wait for the book), I thought it would be a good time to go over our protocols, so you can see just how extensive our testing was. This will answer at least some of the questions. Furthermore, to wet your appetite for the new book I am including the test results on two products. They concern samples from Morning Star Labs and Endosyn, which are both known underground laboratories. These samples came in too late to make the book, but are just in time for this article.

The steroid samples examined during the making of UNDERGROUND ANABOLICS were done so at a DEA licensed analytical laboratory. The steroids were subject to a total of five specific lab tests, each of which can tell us something about its quality and assembly. The details of these individual lab tests are discussed below.

* Aerobic Plate Count is a measure of general sanitary quality. It quantifies the amount of bacteria found in the product, but does not identify the bacteria type. The steroid solution is placed on a general purpose medium, and the bacteria is quantified as the number of “colony forming units” per each gram of material.
* Karl Fisher Water is a test that measures the percentage of water in a solution. While not inherently of concern, high water content in an oil-based steroid can reflect unfavorable manufacturing conditions, such as the exposure of the solution or hygroscopic (water absorbing) raw materials to unfiltered air.
* Heavy Metals testing will determine the content (by weight) of toxic metals in the product such as lead, mercury, and arsenic.
* pH is a unit of measure for determining if a liquid is acidic, neutral, or basic (alkaline). An ideal pH is generally considered to be between 4 and 7. Solutions with a high or low pH may cause significant irritation in the muscle tissues at the site of injection.
* Chromatographic Purity is a gas chromatograph test designed to identify all major constituents of the product including the active drug, oily carriers, solvents, co-solvents, other antimicrobial agents, and impurities. This test essentially gives us a wide spectrum analysis of what is present in the steroid solution. It also provides a rough quantification of the active steroid concentration, although some deviation is expected from more accurate assay-based testing.

As you can see, we’ve decided to go for a lot more than steroid dosage this time. In fact, not only did we want to know the dose and if there were any metals, water contamination, or bacteria in the samples, we opted for full chromatographic purity. This gave us a detailed picture of most constituents; even minor parts of the formula that we might not think to look for otherwise. So we were really able to bring you a very detailed look into what (essentially everything) was in each of these black market steroid products. The results for all of our testing will be here very soon. Are you ready to see exactly what you might have been injecting into your body?

On that note, here are the results I promised for the article, from testing done on samples from Morning Star Labs and Endosyn. Note that these samples were tested for chromatographic purity only, and were not analyzed for metals, water, pH, or bacteria like other samples from the UNDERGROUND ANABOLICS book. So this was a more basic set of tests, representing only one level of what you will find in the new book. Chromatographic purity is the most detailed of our tests, however, and again, tells us all the various compounds that are found in a solution. It very often can be the most telling. I hope you like what we have been doing will all this testing, and will support our efforts by preordering the book.

- Methanolone enanthate 140 mg/mL
- Benzyl Alcohol

- Methyl Benzoate
- BHT
- Fatty acid methyl esters
- Fatty acid ethyl esters

* Product: Testosterone Enanthate
* Content: Testosterone Enanthate
* Labeled Dose: 325 mg/mL
* Chromatographic purity testing showed the product to contain:
- Testosterone Enanthate 350 mg/mL
- Benzyl Alcohol
- Benzaldehyde
- Fatty acid methyl esters
- Ethyl oleate
- Aroma aldehydes
- Trace steroids

Testing Comments

Neither product was subject to full analysis, so we do not have enough information to make a complete judgment about the potential risks of using these drugs. Both items did contain the listed active steroids in higher than the labeled amounts, and should yield the expected anabolic results in users. Beyond that, one could see by the list of ingredients that true pharmaceutical grade manufacturing techniques were not used to make these steroids. In both cases, there appeared to be various types of contamination. These (often natural) compounds were not investigated further, but did include things like trace steroids and amines, which often result from faults in steroid synthesis or from the use of non-pharmaceutical grade assembly materials.
Final Comments

As you can see, UNDERGROUND ANABOLICS will showcase a level of steroid testing that we have not done before, or are accustomed to seeing. The beauty of this new “deep testing” with procedures such as chromatographic purity is that it allows us to hold these steroid products under a virtual microscope. While counterfeiters and underground manufacturers may work very hard to convince the buying public that their products are made to real pharmaceutical standards, this testing is far too detailed to trick. If lower grade materials or procedures are used, it will show up on the reports, no matter how fancy and professional the packaging may look!

UNDERGROUND ANABOLICS is not meant to be a condemnation of the underground steroid trade. Instead, it is an unprecedented up-close look at this world. Good and bad, the reader will see it, and be left decide what types of risks are acceptable. More than anything, I believe we all need to move forward in what is clearly the “new era of underground steroid laboratories” with our eyes wide open. Indeed, the market has changed drastically over the last 10 years, and we all need to understand how. This book was written with this goal in mind.
